Spatial distribution and perceived drivers of provisioning service values across an East African montane forest landscape

چکیده
Increasingly, resource managers and planners seek to manage forested landscapes for the value of services they provide. This is especially true in Mau Forest Kenya, a montane area that harbors some Kenya’s most important headwaters but has lost quarter its forest cover since 1999. While managing Forest’s landscape priority, it critical understand why how people these differently. Otherwise, land management policies risk exacerbating rather than alleviating conservation environmental justice problems. particularly provisioning services, category on which communities directly depend. research combines participatory mapping semi-structured interviews socio-cultural values are distributed across two sites within Western analyze linkages between mapped values, their locations, influencing factors. In total, 55 informants were interviewed. Frequently listed water, firewood, cultivation, grazing, timber, medicine. Results indicate four main factors influence location from where derived: historical legal arrangements, social relations, economic conditions, biophysical conditions. How differ based service community question. study demonstrates can use differently distributions influenced by mentioned above. Understanding this heterogeneity enable policy makers create local plans account spatially-explicit values.

Spatial variability in the vegetation structure and composition of an East African rain forest
We conducted a study of spatial variation in tree community structure and composition in the Kakamega Forest of western Kenya. We compared the tree communities at two sites, Buyangu and Isecheno, separated by approximately 11 km of contiguous forest. All trees ‡15 cm d.b.h. were censused along transects covering 4.95 ha at Buyangu and 4.15 ha at Isecheno. The structure of the forest at the two ...

Simulating Carbon Stocks and Fluxes of an African Tropical Montane Forest with an Individual-Based Forest Model
Tropical forests are carbon-dense and highly productive ecosystems. Consequently, they play an important role in the global carbon cycle. In the present study we used an individual-based forest model (FORMIND) to analyze the carbon balances of a tropical forest. The main processes of this model are tree growth, mortality, regeneration, and competition. Model parameters were calibrated using for...
